The “generative eraser” arrives in Paint: a feature you won’t be able to live without

Microsoft is such a big fan of generative AI that even Paint, one of its most basic apps, gets its own little AI feature. Since last year, the company has been testing a very interesting feature called “generative eraser” for Paint on the Windows 11 “Insider” channel (this is a version that allows Microsoft to test its new features). And the good news is that, according to our colleagues at Windows Latest, Microsoft has started rolling out this new feature on stable versions of Windows 11.

In any case, after updating the Paint app, I was able to access this feature, even though I’m not using an “Insider” version of Windows 11. Paint’s generative eraser works exactly like the magic eraser that Google offers on its Pixel smartphones and on the Google Photos app. This new feature on Paint allows you to use artificial intelligence to make objects disappear, without leaving a gap in the image.

How to use the generative eraser on Paint ?

To use the generative eraser, simply use Paint’s selection tool and select the object you want to make disappear. Then, all you have to do is click on the generative eraser icon, below the selection.

Artificial intelligence removes the object you selected, and fills the gap so that the photo remains coherent.

And to be more precise, you can also open the eraser tool in Paint, then click on the generative eraser icon on the right. Then, all you have left is 'use this eraser on the part of the photo you want to make disappear.

But it is possible to be more precise by accessing this tool from the Paint eraser. © Presse-citron

The results are not always excellent, but, in any case, this new feature allows you to make objects disappear, without having to use complicated software and without clipping.
