According to the “Interia” portal, funerals in some Polish towns and villages reach up to 10,000 zlotys. Meanwhile, the funeral allowance is paid in the amount of PLN 4,000, and it has been invariably since 2011. Some Poles are forced to take out a loan in order to bury their deceased relatives. Is there a chance that this state of affairs will change soon?

The funeral services weren't missed

The representatives of the funeral industry do not hide that raising the cost of the burial was an unpleasant necessity for them. In the end, this sector was not spared by increases in energy prices. “Increases in electricity and gas prices, just like in other industries, also hit funeral services” – emphasizes Krzysztof Wolicki, president of the Polish Funeral Association.

Funeral costs include many elements, from purchasing a place in the cemetery, purchasing a coffin, flowers, preparing the body, fees for priests, and organizing a funeral. The prices of these services vary from region to region. The cheapest pine coffin in Mazovia costs PLN 1240, while in the Lublin or Świętokrzyskie voivodeships we will pay PLN 880 for it.

The prices of preparing the body of a deceased for burial are also very low. We will pay the least for this type of service in the Lublin province from PLN 282, and the most in Łódź, where the price is even PLN 469.

Representatives industry indicate that there are situations where the relatives of the deceased can be included in the amount of the funeral grant, although it happens that the total cost of the burial reaches or exceeds PLN 10,000. PLN.

Not everyone can afford it

Unfortunately, not everyone is able to cover the funeral costs out of their own pocket and it is necessary to take out a loan. It is felt particularly hard by the poor and the elderly. Therefore, there is once again an appeal to the government to increase the amount of the funeral allowance.

“Currently, the Ministry of Family and Social Policy is undergoing detailed analyzes regarding the possibility of changing the amount of the funeral allowance” – informs the Family Ministry and social policy, adding that on the one hand the new proposal must take into account the rising costs of the burial as well as the financial possibilities of the state budget.
