According to the head of the European Council, Charles Michel, Ukrainians have chosen their path – democracy and Europe. French President Emmanuel Macron thought otherwise – Ukraine would need decades to join the bloc.
The issue of Ukraine's membership in the European Union has been resolved, now efforts must be made to translate promises into reality. This was stated by the head of the European Council, Charles Michel, speaking in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on January 19.
“The issue of EU membership has been resolved. Ukraine is the EU, and the EU is Ukraine. We must spare no effort to make this promise a reality as soon as possible,” he said.
Russia, according to him, attacked Ukraine because the Ukrainians “choose their own path and destiny – democracy and Europe.”
“By launching missiles into Ukraine, Russia is attacking everything the European Union believes in. They have attacked the backbone of the Union bloc, which we forged from the tragedy of World War II, based on human dignity, freedom and solidarity,” he said. Michel.
The European official remembered the times of the Revolution of Dignity. It was then that the Ukrainians announced the European future.
“So, today I came to Ukraine to tell you: “We are all Ukrainians,” he added.
Russia, according to Michel, is pursuing a strategy of systematically destroying Ukraine in order to force the country to become its vassal, but such a plan is doomed to failure.
“This will not succeed. Ukraine is indestructible, Ukrainians are united, steadfast, brave and proud. Winston Churchill used freedom and hope as a weapon to defeat the Nazis. Nelson Mandela turned a prison cell into a symbol of freedom in order to liberate the people and transform the country. Today (the President of Ukraine ) Volodymyr Zelensky personifies your spirit of resistance,” continued the head of the European Council.
In his opinion, the fate of Ukraine and the European Union is now at stake. Michel shared his personal dream – someday a Ukrainian will definitely take his post.
“A bright future awaits you all in the European Union. Without an independent and free Ukraine, there can be no independent and free safe Europe. Our future is closely connected,” summed up the head of the European Council.
The Ukraine-EU summit with the participation of Zelensky, Michel and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen will be held on February 3, 2023.
Focus already wrote that Zelensky signed an application for Ukraine's accession to the European Union on February 28 last year. In June, the European Parliament adopted a resolution supporting the granting of candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova.
French President Emmanuel Macron said in May 2022 that Ukraine could take decades to join the EU.
