On March 17, 2024, presidential elections will be held in Russia, in which the current head of state Vladimir Putin is going to take part. The Kremlin admits that by this time the war in Ukraine will continue. On Friday, January 13, writes the Russian edition of Kommersant, citing its sources.

“Although Vladimir Putin himself has not yet announced his participation in the 2024 presidential campaign, the Kremlin’s domestic political bloc has already begun preparations for it, based on the fact that the elections will be held as scheduled and with the participation of the incumbent head of state,” Russian journalists report.

It is reported that the discussion of the new presidential campaign began a month before the full-scale invasion of Russia – in January 2022. And in February, United Russia was given the task of updating its base of supporters. According to Russian media, Moscow already has several scenarios for holding elections, all of which assume that Putin will take part in them.

At the same time, Russia is preparing to hold regional elections this year, including in the occupied territories of Ukraine, in particular in the L/DNR. The Kremlin believes that the elections will be held under “special conditions” due to the war and with a new electoral group – families of combatants.

“This year, for the first time, we will have to work with the electorate of the new four regions, which will also take part in the presidential elections. The constitutions adopted (in the “DNR” and “LNR.”) provide for indirect elections of heads, which means that there the issue of legitimacy is especially acute,” said an anonymous representative of the presidential administration.

The report of the Institute for the Study of War ISW dated January 12 says that Russian President Vladimir Putin is probably looking for “scapegoats” for the failures of the army and the inability of the military-industrial complex of the aggressor country to solve the problem of a shortage of weapons and technologies.

On the same day, The Washington Post wrote that the demotion of General of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation Sergei Surovikin suggests that Russian President Vladimir Putin is used to associating people with problems.
