The agency claims that doctors from the Burdenko Main Military Clinical Hospital in Moscow have developed and are already putting into practice an innovative method of 3D modeling of implants that replace damaged areas of bones and even joints.
They allowed several soldiers to fully recover their arms and legs in order to return to the war in Ukraine.
For a person who has received a severe limb injury as a result of a bullet hit or a mine explosion, an individual three-dimensional titanium implant is made, which in shape and size corresponds to the lost bone fragment. It is inserted into the wound site and then filled with bone tissue taken from the patient's other bones, transplanted or grown using stem cells. The doctors then recreate the muscles and skin, restoring the functionality of the injured arm or leg.
“The operation actually recreates the bone,” the doctors say.
According to the Ministry of Defense, one of the participants in the experiment lost part of the tibia of the leg, without which it is impossible to walk. After the implantation operation, he quickly recovered and wished to go to the front again, although such injuries usually lead to amputation of the limb.
Leonid Brizhan, deputy head of the hospital for research work, emphasized that no one else does such operations in the world. According to him, the new method is now actively used in the Burdenko hospital, and in the near future many other medical institutions in the Russian Federation will be able to adopt it.
The Pentagon has calculated that since the start of a full-scale invasion in Ukraine, more than 100 thousand Russian military. According to the chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Mark Milley, the Ukrainian side should suffer about the same losses.
