Google is aware that its Chrome browser can sometimes be very resource-intensive. And to remedy this, the firm has already offered some solutions. In 2023, for example, it deployed a memory saver that makes browsing smoother by freeing up resources used by inactive tabs. This memory saver was also accompanied by a battery saver for laptops. And this week, the firm is offering improvements to these features, which will help users better manage the performance of Google Chrome on their computers.
A new feature called Performance Detection identifies performance issues on the active tab and displays a new button next to the address bar. By clicking on it, the user accesses a mini-window that suggests a problem with the identified performance issue. In the example below, provided by Google Chrome, the browser identifies a problem playing a YouTube video and suggests closing two resource-intensive tabs to resolve the issue.
Otherwise, Google is also improving the memory saver that it launched in 2023. The operation, which consists of freeing up the resources used by inactive tabs, does not change. However, the user will be able to choose between three options. The moderate option will deactivate inactive tabs taking into account the needs of the system. The balanced mode will also take into account the user's habits. And an extreme mode will deactivate inactive tabs more quickly. This new setting will be found in the performance settings of Google Chrome. Otherwise, it is also possible to indicate to Chrome which sites should always be active and not be deactivated by the memory saver.
