A hangover is a phenomenon that is often encountered by those who, to put it mildly, have gone over alcohol at a corporate party or at a festive table. Leading Harley Street Nutritionist and King's College Research Fellow, Dr Megan Rossi of Queensland, Australia, lists five ways to minimize the effects of heavy drinking.
According to the expert, the most dangerous drink that hits the liver the most is champagne and everything “with bubbles.”
“Researchers at the HPRU Medical Research Center in Guilford gave volunteers sparkling or non-alcoholic champagne. Those who were given sparkling got drunk faster. This is because the bubbles cause alcohol to be absorbed into your bloodstream more quickly, overtaking your liver's ability to digest it at such a rate. The higher the concentration of alcohol in the blood, the more toxic the effect,” she said.
Therefore, it is better to limit the use of prosecco, pop and champagne and give preference to wine or low-alcohol cocktails.
Prepare your intestines
How the body will resist the influence of alcohol depends on the state of the intestinal microflora.
“If your gut microbes are in good shape, they're more likely to produce more butyrate, which could well help the body better resist the anti-inflammatory effects of alcohol,” Rossi said. She recommends eating “nutritious, fiber-rich meals before and after any party.
Stay away from drinks with artificial sweeteners
Dr. Rossi notes that artificial sweetener blends are never beneficial.
“A Northern Kentucky University study showed that if you drank vodka and diet soda or vodka and regular soda, the 'diet' version actually resulted in a 25% increase in blood alcohol concentration,” she says .
Sweet sodas can be replaced with frozen berries and sparkling water.
“This, thanks to the water content, will further slow down the absorption of alcohol,” the nutritionist assures.
Eat before you drink
Sounds easy, but so many people still can't eat anything an hour or two before a party.
“Favor food before drinking alcohol, and at a party always eat first to slow down the absorption of alcohol and give your liver a chance to keep up,” the doctor advises and recommends high-protein meals before the feast. .
After a wild drinking party, Rossi recommends drinking plenty of fluids. It can be frozen berry soda, kombucha, mineral water.
“And if the worst happens and you really get a hangover, you can always try an electrolyte drink that contains salts like potassium , and may help you absorb fluids better during rehydration,” she said.
