    < p>The Mars Express spacecraft has sent back spectacular new images to Earth of the Mariner Valleys, a huge canyon system on Mars that is the largest and deepest canyon in the solar system, according to Futurism.

    The European Space Agency has published images that made the Mars Express orbiter, which has been exploring Mars since 2003.

    The new images show parts of a massive geological structure on the Red Planet called the Mariner Valleys. This gigantic canyon, which consists of several parts, is rubbed for 4 thousand kilometers, has a width of 200 km, and its depth reaches 7 km.

    This Martian canyon is 10 times longer, 20 times wider and 5 times deeper than the famous Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA.

    If the Mariner Valley canyon were on Earth, it could stretch from the northernmost tip of Norway to the southernmost tip of the island of Sicily.

    According to scientists, unlike the Grand Canyon on Earth, the Martian canyon was created not by erosion by water, but due to the movement of tectonic plates. This deep chasm is lined with rocks and cratered by space rock impacts.

    New images from Mars Express show 840 km long Io Canyon and 805 km Teton Canyon. And these canyons have an impressive depth – up to 7 km. For example, the highest mountain in the Alps, Mont Blanc, could easily fit in a Martian canyon, because its height is 4809 m.

    Inside the canyon system are hills that reach a height of 3 km. The surface of the Mariner Valleys has been severely eroded by strong Martian winds, which may indicate that this canyon consists of rocks that are more susceptible to destruction than the surrounding surface.

    Thanks to research conducted using Mars Express data, scientists have found that aquifer sulfate minerals are present in the canyon. Some scientists believe that the rises in the canyon may have been due to the water, which then evaporated. But this theory has not yet been confirmed.

    Mars Express flies around Mars for almost 20 years, and during this time he has been carefully exploring the surface of the Red Planet, as well as its atmosphere. Thanks to the images of the spacecraft, scientists were able to see in more detail many geological structures on Mars, as well as learn about the minerals that make up its surface.

    As Focus already wrote, the Mars Express apparatus made images of craters on Mars, which are very similar in appearance to a giant brain.

    We remind you that in June of this year, the European Space Agency announced that it had finally replaced the software for Mars Express. Before that, he worked on a system that is based on Windows 98.
