Pope Francis sent a letter to the former Formula 1 driver, four-time Paralympic champion Alex Zanardi parolepart that June 19 was involved in a serious accident, underwent surgery and was entered by doctors into a state of pharmacological coma. The text was published the Italian edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport.
In his letter, which 83-year-old Pontiff conveyed through other Zanardi — chaplain of the prison of Padua Marco Pozza a, he assured that he prays for the 53-year-old Alex and his family and praised the courage of the famous athlete and broadcaster, by his example, gave motivation to many others.
“Your story is an example of how to be able again to go forward after the sudden stop. Through sport you are taught to live the life of the protagonist, turning disabilities into the lesson of humanity, wrote Pope Francis.
According to the Italian media, as Zanardi is estimated as very heavy, but stable. However, there is a risk of losing the former race car driver view. Although the doctor Giuseppe Olivieri, who operated on the Italian believes the injury to Alex is not as serious as brain damage legend of Formula 1 Michael Schumacher.
“Diffuse axonal injury is a very serious injury of the cerebral cortex, after which it is difficult to regain cognitive skills and functions of motility, — quotes the words of Giuseppe Olivieri Nextgen-Auto. — What we understand — Zanardi escaped such injuries. Dot damage is not so important, what is important is the impact of injuries inside the skull. I can say that Alex’s injury is not as serious as Schumacher.
But we are in no hurry to withdraw patients with similar injuries from a state of artificial coma. To assess damage you will need one or two weeks. The fact that the Zanardi is the athlete who can help his physical form gives us optimism.”
Note that Zanardi competed in Formula-1 in 1991-1994 and 1999. But much greater success he has achieved in the American series CART, where twice became the champion. In September 2001 while racing in the German “Lausitzring” Zanardi got into a terrible accident (the opponent flew into his car at speeds of 354 km/h!). The doctors barely saved Alex and were forced to amputate both his legs, one at thigh level and the other in the knee.
But Zanardi did not give up. First, he returned ha race track, and then achieved considerable success in racing bicycles with manual drive. He is four — time Paralympic champion London and Rio de Janeiro, a 12-time world champion parolepart.
Even without both legs, Alex Zanardi did not give up the sport of high achievements
