Possibility of strike at VIA Rail postponed until this afternoon

VIA Rail warns that some of its services could be “disrupted” on Monday. The workers' union has postponed its threat of a strike until 4 p.m. ET, if an agreement is not reached by then.

VIA Rail says that& #x27;it remains committed to negotiating a fair and reasonable agreement.

Nevertheless, the carrier posted this travel advisory on its website this morning: VIA Rail is currently assessing the impact on services and will post the information on its website shortly .

The company did not set a time or provide further details.

For its part, the employees' union announced late Sunday evening that the start of the walkout initially scheduled for midnight on Monday would be postponed, saying it remained hopeful of reaching an agreement.

The threat of a strike affects approximately 2,400 employees working in stations, on board trains, in VIA Rail maintenance and customer service centers and in administrative offices.

Members of Unifor Council 4000 and Local 100 have given their union a firm strike mandate if an agreement cannot be reached for the renewal of collective agreements.

We remain hopeful of reaching an agreement, said Lana Payne, National Secretary-Treasurer of Unifor, in a statement released late Sunday evening.

The union had given a strike notice last Thursday in order to warn users of possible disruptions to come in the transport service.

On Sunday, the union confirmed that rail services would be maintained on Monday.

The union blamed VIA Rail last week for maintain its demands for concessions, including in terms of job security.

VIA Rail indicated, for its part, that it is making every effort to reach an agreement with Unifor .
