While the text will still have to go before the National Assembly, the draft State budget for 2025 has been adopted by the Senate.

The draft State budget for 2025 was comfortably adopted by the Senate on Thursday, January 23, in first reading, a first step taken for François Bayrou's government despite the still intact opposition of the socialists.

The upper house, with a right-centrist majority that supports the government, validated the draft finance bill by 217 votes to 105. The Socialists, environmentalists and communists voted against it.

A common version before trying to resist censorship

Suspended in December by the censure of the Barnier government and resumed in January, the text will be submitted on January 30 at a meeting of deputies and senators, the joint committee, tasked with arriving at a common version capable of resisting the censorship of the National Assembly.

If they succeed, the common version will have to pass the filter of the National Assembly in the week of February 3 for a final vote, or a possible return of 49.3, doubtless followed by a new motion of censure.
