Highlighting Ukraine and other countries millions of dollars to strengthen their defense capability, the United States do so for the reason that regard Russia as a serious threat to the world.
This was stated by U.S. Secretary of state Mike Pompeo on Thursday, June 25, speaking at organized by the German Marshall Fund (GMF) web event “Brussels forum”, reports “Voice of America”.
“We consider Russia a serious threat, “he said.
He added that if Europe, and Germany in particular, spend on their defense spending is less than stipulated in the Charter of the NATO 2% of GDP, it suggests that Berlin does not perceive the Russian threat as seriously as the United States.
The Secretary of state noted that the construction of “Nord stream-2”, which will pump Russian gas under the Baltic sea to Germany, increases the dependence of the Federal Republic of Russia.
“A significant part of energy in Germany is now associated with Russia are so deep and fundamental way that Vladimir Putin, who, in all probability, will remain in power for quite a long time, will have the opportunity, a real opportunity to cause substantial damage to Germany if he decides to do it, “—said Pompeo.
U.S. Secretary of state also stressed that today the changing nature of conflicts, and deterrence of potential aggression, including from Russia, not only limited to placing a certain number of ground troops: “We have come to a fundamental revision of what is the nature of the conflict, the nature of the threats and how should we allocate our resources, whether the resources in the intelligence community, in the air force, the Marines or the army.”
“And the decision that the President made in respect to Germany is the result of the collective set of decisions about how we position our resources around the world,” noted Mike Pompeo.
Under the new distribution of military resources, the us presence in some regions can be reduced, so “some countries need to step up and take responsibility for their own defense that they previously did not,” he said.
