A storm and strong winds destroyed residential buildings on an island in the Atlantic Ocean. Local residents are literally cut off from mainland America.
The US Coast Guard has shared action-packed footage from a rescue operation that evacuated Sanibel Island, Florida, which was hit by Hurricane Ian. Video posted on YouTube channel 10 Tampa Bay.
A storm and strong winds destroyed residential buildings on an island in Florida, it was literally cut off from mainland America, so a large-scale rescue operation had to be carried out, in which the MH-65 Dolphin rescue team participated.
Officer Tyler Kilbane, wearing a GoPro camera on his helmet, helped an elderly woman with her grandson board a helicopter who live in one of the areas of the island. These people were waiting for help on the porch of the house with the dog.
Kilbane praised them for using a piece of mirror to get the attention of the helicopter rescuers.
First, a woman sat in a basket attached to a helicopter, and then a young man with a dog was lifted up.
After that, the rescuers brought other residents of the island aboard.
A Coast Guard officer compared it to a military operation. There were problems with mobile communications on the island, not all residents had phones, and the victims had to rely on other signaling devices, such as pieces of glass or mirrors, to attract attention.
