The verdict of the American Semi Whelan, convicted of spying against Russia, entered into force because the defense did not appeal, told TASS Whelan’s lawyer Vladimir Zherebenkov.
“We decided to do so as not to waste time. Those two or three months that would have gone to the complaints, can now be spent on negotiations and organization of exchange Whelan on Russians convicted in the United States. After the entry into force of the verdict legal obstacles to this is not” – said the lawyer.
In June the Moscow city court sentenced Whelan to 16 years of imprisonment with serving in a colony of strict regime. The prosecution asked to sentence a former marine with a US passport, Canada, the UK and Ireland to 18 years in prison for trying to scout the roster of one of the power units of the Russian Federation.

The diplomat promised that “the United States will continue to seek fair solutions.” The diplomat also noted that the President of the United States “informed about the progress of the case Whelan”. Their indignation at the sentence expressed by Secretary of state Mike Pompeo. In his account on the social network Twitter, he demanded his immediate release.
Paul Whelan was detained in Moscow in late 2018. According to the investigation, seized him flash cards of information containing state secrets. The defendant argued that Russia came to the wedding, and the “stick” was from a friend of the operative and was sure that her pictures of their joint vacation. The defense tried to prove that it was a setup.
