A new galaxy, according to scientists, already existed just 250 million years after the birth of the Universe.
< p>Astronomers continue to study the first scientific data coming to Earth from the Webb Space Telescope, which began operations in the first half of July 2022. In a new paper, yet to be peer-reviewed, an international team of astronomers claims that the Webb Telescope has found the oldest and most distant galaxy in the universe. It existed as early as 250 million years after the Big Bang and this age is 50 million years older than the age of the previous record holder, the GN-z11 galaxy, which was also discovered by this space telescope, according to New Atlas.
By studying Webb Space Telescope scientific datasets, an international team of scientists have discovered 44 previously unknown galaxies in the universe. Among them, a galaxy stands out, which was named CEERS-93316. It existed already 250 million years after the birth of the universe, and thus the Webb telescope broke its previous record for detecting the oldest and most distant galaxies.
As Focus already wrote, the space telescope has discovered a galaxy called GLASS-z13 or GN -z13, which existed 300 million years after the Big Bang. This discovery, like the discovery of the galaxy CEERS-93316, was made by a space telescope using a near-infrared camera (NIRcam).
So far, the CEERS-93316 galaxy is in the status of a candidate for the oldest and most distant galaxy in the Universe, because the conclusions of scientists have not yet been peer reviewed. Scientists in their article prove that the discovered cosmic object from the early Universe is still a galaxy, and not a star or an active galactic nucleus.
According to astronomer Rebecca Bowler, Webb Space Telescope observations show the time when the very first galaxies formed. Scientists believe that Webb's data already suggests that there are many more galaxies in the very early universe than computer models predicted.
The Webb Telescope is designed to look at the very beginning of the history of the universe, and this information will help scientists understand how the first stars and galaxies were formed, which are believed to have appeared 100 million years after the Big Bang. The devices of the new telescope can capture the light of the most distant objects in space, in which its huge main mirror plays an important role.
Scientists suggest that the galaxy CEERS-93316, if it moves from the status of a candidate to the status of a scientifically recognized object, may not hold the palm for long. Most likely, the Webb Space Telescope will be able to find an older and more distant galaxy in the Universe, and this may happen in the near future.
As Focus already wrote, one of the latest achievements of the Webb telescope is discovery of the most distant star in the universe. This star has been named Earendel, although it also has a more scientific name, WHL0137-LS.
