There has not been such a large snow cover for more than half a century. Does that mean we're in for a harsh winter?
Snow cover in the northern hemisphere is the highest in 56 years!
How indicates the portal “Wirtualna Polska”, the level of snow cover recorded at the end of November this year in the northern hemisphere is the highest in 56 years. What does this mean in the perspective of the approaching winter? Should we expect a lot of snowfall and low temperatures?
Record figures
In November, in the northern hemisphere, meteorologists record an increase in snow cover. This year, the data in this area turned out to be record-breaking. According to data provided by NOAA/Rutgers Global Slow Lab, the most recent snow cover covered an area of 41 million square kilometers.
This is one of the highest records recorded in our hemisphere since over half a century! Unfortunately, this does not bode well for the coming winter — at least for those who expected it to be warm.
The large extent of the snow cover indicates that this year's winter may be colder than in recent years. This applies both to Europe and North America. Snow should be expected in the coming days also in Poland.
Poland divided into halves
The forecasts of IMGW meteorologists show that this week the weather over our country will be shaped by a high pressure, which will bring us a lot of clouds and fog. Light snowfall (mainly in the East), sleet (Central) and rain or drizzle (West) may occur.
The models used by meteorologists indicate various scenarios for the coming winter. According to IMGW, the temperature in the last month of the year is to be within the long-term norm. The same is to be the case with the sum of precipitation.
The CFS model indicates that the temperature in December will be higher than the long-term norm, although more severe bouts of winter are to be expected. It is worth remembering that long-term forecasts are subject to high risk, which is associated with a large number of variables.
And you, what kind of winter do you expect?
