They remained buried in the snow for more than 30 minutes: two Estonian skiers died in a Savoyard resort

Six skieurs estoniens ont été emportés par une avalanche ce dimanche 12 janvier. Ils se trouvaient dans un secteur hors piste de la station. Parmi eux, deux sont morts.

This Sunday, January 12, in the ski resort of Val d'Isère, in Savoie, six Estonian tourists were caught in an avalanche in an off-piste area, the reverse side of Cugnaï. Among the six Baltic skiers, two of them died after being buried under the snow for 30 minutes according to information from France 3.

A “strong” avalanche risk this Sunday

In a press release In a Facebook post, rescuers said four of the tourists were buried by the snow, one of whom was only partially buried and was able to be pulled out “quickly” and another was came out conscious and still breathing.

The other two remained more than 30 minutes under the snow before being found by the station's dog teams. They were under arrest cardio respiratory and died on the spot despite the efforts of the rescuers present. The skiers were not equipped with DVA (Avalanche Victim Detector) while the avalanche risk was 4 out of 5 this Sunday in the resort.

The station's helicopter and around twenty ski patrollers were mobilized. The latter thus recalled “the importance of being equipped, trained, informed and accompanied by a professional”.
