What are black holes?

Before we talk about time travel, we need to understand what black holes are. Black holes are among the densest and heaviest objects in the universe. They appear when a huge star shrinks during its death and turns not into a neutron star, but into a black hole.

“The more mass an object has, the stronger its gravitational field. Exactly it makes it difficult for people to fly into space, so we have to build powerful rockets that would overcome the earth's gravity, but a black hole has such a strong gravitational field that even light cannot escape it, which, by the way, is the fastest thing in the universe. at least known to scientists today,” says Baron.

“Einstein's general theory of relativity says that all matter and energy in the universe bend and stretch space. And the more mass an object has, the more it bends the space around it. As for a black hole, any object that approaches it and gets into it, can't leave it, because it creates a kind of hollow. Light can't get out of here for the same reason, because the slopes of this hollow are very steep, and the light cannot pick up the desired speed,” says Baron.

In any black hole, there is a certain point where the slopes of this depression become so steep that nothing can escape from the black hole and it is called the event horizon.

Time warp

“If space is curved near a black hole, then time is also curved. Time near a black hole is much slower than on Earth. For example, 1 year here will be equal to 80 years on our planet,” says Baron.

It turns out that black holes can be used for time travel. For example, if you try to see the future, you need to fly near a black hole, and then return to Earth. According to Baron, until the spacecraft crosses the event horizon, then it has a chance to escape from the gravitational field of the black hole.

Time loop

“If you figured out the journey to the future, then how to get into the past with the help of a black hole? In fact, the fun begins here, because the black hole bends time very much and forms time loops. For example, take a sheet of paper and connect the two ends of the sheet together Here's a time loop, that's what a black hole does with time,” says Baron.

According to the scientist, if you get into this time loop, which is called a closed time-like curve, then a person will find himself at a point in space where events begin in the future and end in the past.

What will happen to a person who wants to use a black hole to travel in time?

According to Baron, using a black hole as a natural time travel machine is, to put it mildly, a problematic process. If people on a spaceship reach a black hole and want to travel to the distant past, then according to Baron, three problems stand in their way:

  • Firstly, you can poison yourself in the past only at a time when this black hole already existed. That is, if it appeared 65 million years ago, after the dinosaurs died out, then it will be impossible to see these animals.
  • Second, in order to travel through time, the spacecraft would need to cross the event horizon to get into the time loop. But in order to leave this loop at a certain time, the ship will need to leave the event horizon. Theoretically, this is possible if you gain a speed that exceeds the speed of light. But so far, scientists are sure that nothing in the Universe can pick up such speed.
  • Thirdly, which will seem the most unpleasant problem for humans, it is worth considering the fact that during the crossing of the event horizon and the spacecraft and all people on board will undergo a process of “spaghettification”. No matter how tasty it sounds, it is a disastrous process for a person. At this time, the human body will stretch in space in the form of spaghetti. And most likely it will be such a thin line that it will look like a line of atoms spiraling into the void of a black hole.

“In the near future, time travel using a black hole will be impossible , and whether they will ever be possible at all, is still not clear,” says Barron.
