Sweden handed over to Turkey the first person convicted of membership in the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which Ankara considers a terrorist organization. This is reported by the Turkish edition of NTV.

As specified, Mahmut Tat was detained in Sweden and, after passing the appropriate procedures, was sent to Turkey by plane, where he was taken to the Istanbul airport police station. After that, the man was sent to the Gaziosmanpa┼ča courthouse.

In Turkey, Tat was sentenced to 6 years and 10 months in prison for membership in the PKK. In 2015, he asked Sweden for political asylum, but he was denied.

By transferring a member of the PKK to the Turkish side, Stockholm is fulfilling the agreements within the framework of the NATO membership memorandum signed with Turkey, which provides for the extradition of persons whom Ankara accuses of terrorist activities.

At the same time, Turkey demanded that the Scandinavian countries declare Kurdish organizations terrorist and extradite those accused of terrorism.
