Trump Signs Executive Order That Saves TikTok for 75 Days (and What's Next Is Already Coming)

Barely inaugurated, Donald Trump signed numerous executive orders, including the one that allows TikTok to remain accessible in the United States. This order asks the Department of Justice not to apply the law that was supposed to ban TikTok starting January 19, for a period of 75 days. And as promised by the president, this order also asks the government not to sanction the companies that allowed TikTok to operate on January 19, one day before the signing of the order.

This 75-day period should allow the new administration to “determine the course of action in an orderly manner to protect national security while avoiding an abrupt shutdown of a communications platform used by millions of Americans.” As a reminder, TikTok is used by 170 million people in the United States. The social network also claims that a month of American ban would cost American small businesses $1 billion, and creators $300 million.

A new era for TikTok ?

The decree does not indicate how Donald Trump intends to proceed to allow TikTok to exist in the United States, without threatening national security. But in a post on the social network Truth, before his inauguration, he raised the possibility of the social network becoming a 50% American company. For him, this would allow Americans to continue to benefit from this platform, while ensuring that it is in good hands.

This solution, less radical than a sale of the entirety of TikTok by its owner ByteDance, could also suit Beijing. “As for actions such as corporate operations and acquisitions, we always believe that they should be decided independently by companies based on market principles,” a Chinese Foreign Ministry official was recently quoted as saying, according to the South China Morning Post. “If Chinese companies are involved, they must comply with Chinese laws and regulations.”

  • After his inauguration, Donald Trump signed an executive order that allows TikTok to operate in the United States for 75 days
  • This delay will allow the administration to find a sustainable solution that will allow TikTok to operate, while taking into account national security
  • The idea Trump has floated is for TikTok to become a 50% American company
  • And this project could well get the green light from Beijing
