Tyrannosaurus was not at all what it is depicted: what new study showed

A new study shows that Tyrannosaurus Rex could have been 70% larger than known fossils show.

Canadian paleontologists analyzed data from 32 of the most complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeletons and came to interesting conclusions. They believe that these huge dinosaurs could have been even larger and weighed 15 tons, writes Live Science.

Scientists from the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa tried to find the answer to the question: what is the maximum size that one of the largest and most aggressive predators could reach? that ever lived on Earth?

Previous research has already shown that there were approximately 2.5 billion tyrannosaurs living on the planet. About this Focusalready wrote. But scientists were able to find only 32 more or less complete skeletons of these ancient animals, which provided the maximum possible information about their size. A study by Canadian scientists offers a new theory about how big these predators were.

Now the largest tyrannosaurus is considered an individual called “Scotty”. The remains of this dinosaur were discovered 30 years ago in Canada. It had a length of 13 meters and weighed, as scientists believe, 8.8 tons.

< p>According to Jordan Mallon, author of the new study, calculations based on available data on tyrannosaurs show that these animals were about 70% larger and could have weighed 15 tons. For example, a typical bus weighs approximately 11 tons.

Scientists have created a simulation in which they entered information about the average lifespan of tyrannosaurs, their features and distinctive intraspecific features.

“We got two results for the largest tyrannosaurus that could theoretically live on Earth. The first result showed that such a dinosaur could weigh 24 tons, but we immediately rejected this option, since we would definitely find such a giant. But the second option we seems very plausible. A figure of 15 tons and a correspondingly large body length is theoretically possible for representatives of this species of dinosaurs, “says Mallon.

Scientists have concluded that tyrannosaurs could grow to such sizes, but now we need to find the fossilized remains of this predicted animal.

< p>“Tyrannosaurus fossils are very scarce to draw any more precise conclusions. In fact, it is very difficult for paleontologists to extract information from the ancient remains of dinosaurs. We still know too little about them. Therefore, until such a giant tyrannosaurus rex is discovered, our calculations are only hypothetically, the data show that nothing prevented these predators from being much larger than we imagine,” says Mallon.

Scientists now believe that on average tyrannosaurs were 10-12 meters, and the height at the hip at the level of 3.5-4 meters. Although individual fossils hint that indeed their size could be larger, as well as their weight. All the fossilized remains of tyrannosaurus that paleontologists have discovered date back to a period of 70-66 million years ago.

Focus already wrote that the tyrannosaurus rex turned out to be a more ferocious predator than scientists thought.

Recall that Focus wrote about a study that suggests that there were three different types of tyrannosaurs living on Earth, and not just one – T.rex.
