On Thursday, January 5, Ukrainian entrepreneur and billionaire Konstantin Zhevago, previously arrested in France, was released on bail of one million euros. This was reported by the Telegram channel “Politics of the Country”.
The next meeting of the French court in Chambéry on the extradition of Zhevago to Ukraine will take place on January 19. Reuters notes that the hearing was postponed for two weeks after Zhevago's lawyers and the prosecutor asked for more time to prepare.
According to journalists, Zhevago does not admit his guilt, saying that his case is politically motivated. He also asked the court to leave the prison until the next hearing on bail of one million euros.
“This is my first time in prison. I did not do what I am accused of in this case, I do not deserve it” , — said Zhevago.
The entrepreneur's lawyer added that it is “very difficult” to manage a business from a place of deprivation of liberty.
Why Zhevago was under arrest
Former people's deputy Konstantin Zhevago was detained on December 27 in the ski resort of Courchevel in the French Alps at the request of Ukraine. Shortly thereafter, he left the post of director and resigned from the board of directors of the Swiss mining company Ferrexpo.
According to the investigation, Zhevago organized a mechanism for embezzlement of $ 113 million of his bank Finance and Credit Bank JSC. Thus, he harmed the interests of the state and the bank's depositors. Zhevago was suspected of committing crimes under Part 3 of Art. 27, part 5 of Art. 191, part 3 of Art. 209 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
The State Bureau of Investigation reported that the property of the suspected businessman was seized. In particular, we are talking about the shares of his companies worth hundreds of millions of hryvnias and real estate.
In October 2020, the arrested assets worth more than 300 million hryvnias were transferred to the National Agency for Identification, Search and Management of Assets.< /p>
On July 15, 2021, Interpol put Zhevago on the international wanted list.
