Former Ukrainian footballer Vasyl Vasylenko, known for her performances as a defender for Tavriya Novotroitsk, “torpedo” from Melitopol and “Friendship” from Berdyansk, was arrested in Moscow on charges of spying for their country, reports TASS.
“Employees of FSB of Russia with the participation of the Russian law enforcement bodies have established the involvement of the citizen of Ukraine Vasilenko Vasily Ivanovich to commit a crime under article 276 of the criminal code of Russian Federation (“Espionage”). He is charged, it is contained in one of the capital’s prison,” — said a source in law enforcement bodies.
According to Russian agencies, 52-year-old Vasilenko was arrested in October 2019 in the case of smuggling, but in the spring the charge was changed to spying. The arrest of the citizen of Ukraine it became known only now, as he did not appeal any of the decisions on the extension of arrest, as well as the fact of detention.
June 19, the court extended the arrest of ex-footballer to September 24. Details of the criminal case, which is a Department of the FSB in Moscow, contain “classified”. Vasilenko faces up to 20 years in prison.
In the case also says that Vasily Vasilenko, who completed his football career in 2001, was born in 1967 and is a citizen of Ukraine.
