Note that Ukrainians used to become knights of the Order of the Legion of Honor. Among them are the outstanding Ukrainian artist Ilya Repin, anthropologist and ethnographer Fyodor Vovk, choreographer Sergei Lifar, physician Vasily Vernadsky.

The Order of the Legion of Honor is a French award that was established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte following the example of knightly orders. Belonging to the order is the highest distinction, honor and official recognition of special merits in France.

The order is accepted as a member for outstanding military or civilian merit. And this is usually done by the President of the French Republic, who is also the Grand Master of the order.
