Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expected in Washington | War in Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is due to visit the US capital on Wednesday, according to multiple US media reports .

If this trip is confirmed, it would be his first trip abroad since the outbreak of war in Ukraine at the end of the month of February.

Mr. Zelensky is expected to address Congress as U.S. lawmakers prepare to vote on new aid money to send to his country.

A meeting with President Joe Biden is also in the plans. The latter recently authorized the sending of anti-aircraft defense missiles to Ukraine, to help kyiv troops thwart the Russian air force, which has been pounding the country's energy infrastructure for several weeks, depriving numerous sources of current.

In addition, the World Bank announced a new envelope of 610 million US dollars, intended to meet the “urgent needs” of Ukraine in terms of health.

L& #x27;institution estimates that, since the start of the clashes, more than 5.5% of the country's health infrastructure has been destroyed or damaged.

This aid is given in the form of loans from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), loans guaranteed by Great Britain to the tune of 500 million dollars.

The World Bank last week granted an additional 2 billion US dollars in aid to the Ukrainian private sector, aid which should be used for the reconstruction of the country.

These amounts bring to $18 billion the assistance offered by the World Bank to Ukraine to deal with the Russian invasion. Of this number, 15 billion have already been paid to the government of Volodymyr Zelensky.

On Tuesday, the Ukrainian president visited the city of Bakhmout, in Donbass, a area partially occupied by Vladimir Putin's forces.

It was a surprise visit, quite risky since the Russians are at the gates of the city and claim the conquest of several of its suburbs.

On images broadcast on the airwaves of Ukrainian television, we can see the president distributing medals to soldiers who defend the city.

Here in Donbass you protect all of Ukraine. It's not just Bakhmout, it's Bakhmout Fortress, Mr. Zelensky said to motivate his troops.

After a series of Russian defeats on different fronts , the fighting is now concentrated in eastern Ukraine, including the Donbass.
