Head of department, general manager Veli-Mikko Niemiis the new head of office of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health (STM). The government appointed Niemi to the post on Thursday based on the proposal of the Minister of Social Affairs and Health Hanna Sarkkinen (left).
According to STT, Niemi is a social democrat in terms of party affiliation.
< p class="paragraph">Niemi has worked in the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health as the head of the Communities and Functionality Department since 2020.
Previously, he has worked in the ministry as head of the welfare and health promotion department between 2014 and 2017.
After that, he has worked as a senior director and head of the international affairs unit.
Before this, Niemi worked at the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry as director of food safety in the years 2007–2014 and deputy head of department in the years 2002–2007, and before that in expert positions at STM, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the European Commission.

Niemi has a degree in veterinary medicine. According to the presentation memo, only he met all the eligibility requirements for the position. Five people applied for the position.
According to the memorandum, Niemi fulfills all the eligibility requirements for the position well and, thanks to his previous work experience, he is well prepared for the position of head of the ministry's chancellery.
– He has long-term and wide-ranging experience in government management and expert positions in several ministries, the memo states.
Niemi succeeds Kirsi Varhila in the position, who took over as director of the Satakunta welfare area.
The term of office of the head of the office begins on August 15, 2022 and lasts for five years.
The task of the head of the office is to lead, develop and monitor the activities of the ministry and its administrative sector. The head of the office is the highest official of the ministry.
