Some smartphones or tablets are now so powerful that, in theory, they are capable of running titles which used to be reserved for consoles or gamer PCs. As proof, AAA video games are already available on some iPhone models, such as Resident Evil Village or Assassin's Creed Mirage.

On Android, some users already use emulators, such as Winlator, to launch x86 video games designed for PC, although the experience is far from perfect for the moment. And recently, we learned that a major player in the smartphone market is now working on a technology that could transform its tablets into gaming PCs: Xiaomi.

Xiaomi is reportedly working on a tool called WinPlay

As reported by Android Authority, Xiaomi has presented a new tool called WinPlay on the Chinese social network Weibo. It is said to rely on “three-layer virtualization technology” to run Windows games on Android. It would even allow games to be installed from Steam or GOG, and would be compatible with a keyboard and mouse, or a controller.

  • Emulators already exist to play PC games on Android
  • But Xiaomi would like to go further by offering its own application
  • Furthermore, with the arrival of the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, the line between mobile and PC is increasingly thin, when it comes to video games
