VIDEO. “It's the Holy Grail”: Fabien Maury embarks on a solo round-the-world sailing trip

Spread the love

Fabien Maury, originally from Aveyron, is passionate about the sea and sailing and has embarked on the crazy project of sailing around the world solo. He opened the doors of Aqui Lou, his sailboat, on board which he sails the world's oceans.

In his fifties, Fabien Maury decided it was time to embrace his wildest dream: sailing around the world solo. As a true enthusiast in search of the “Grail”, he had initially set himself the goal of doing it non-stop and passing through the three southern capes, the mythical Capes of Good Hope, Leeuwin and Horn, after leaving Carnon on September 21.

But, as Vendée Globe fans know, even with a technical team that is on top of everything, the race is far from being without danger. So alone, without a sponsor, despite the unwavering support of his loved ones, Fabien had to revise his objectives downwards since a breakdown forced him to make a stopover in South Africa.

“Yes, there are difficult moments, especially when I break the rudder twice in the space of a month. When I decide, on the advice of Michel Desjoyeaux, not to go for Cape Horn, it was a very hard decision, I still cry as I write these lines”, he tells us by message.

The land on board

Not diminished, however, the adventure with a capital A finally continues by heading for Panama after having crossed that of Leeuwin, to cross from the Pacific to the Atlantic.

On board Aqui Lou, Fabien Maury, an Aveyronnais attached to his local products, cheese and charcuterie in the lead as he says, discovers other local gems since he brought flour that allows him to make his bread, or even lentils. “I highlighted the gastronomy of Aveyron in this project, to my great surprise, we grow spirulina, we make pasta and we grow lentils on the banks of Lake Pareloup and I took these products with me”.

In close contact with his loved ones, especially his daughter, who manages her social networks from dry land, Fabien intends to make his experience a gift for those who have not had his chance. “I want to introduce habitable sailing to a thousand young people”.
