The compact Volkswagen Polo remains popular and massive, but under the new eco-standards, its production may become unprofitable.
Volkswagen are considering dropping the Polo model. The mass B-class hatchback may be discontinued by 2025. This became known to the publication Autocar.
The current Volkswagen Polo is a fairly successful model and the demand for it remains quite high. However, hatchback production may soon become unprofitable.
It's all the fault of the strict eco-standards of Euro-7, which should come into force in 2025. Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schaefer said that they would make petrol and diesel cars more expensive by about 3,000-5,000 euros – it would be necessary to install expensive equipment.
Inexpensive models like the Volkswagen Polo will suffer the most from the introduction of Euro-7, because for them, such an increase in price will be more tangible than for more expensive cars. By the way, the Ford Fiesta is being discontinued for the same reason.
In addition, the introduction of new safety standards will affect the price of a car. According to Thomas Schaefer, the profitability of the development of the new Volkswagen Polo is currently being calculated and the final decision regarding the fate of the model will soon be made.
Polo is one of the most popular Volkswagen models. Since 1975, over 15 million cars of six generations have been produced.
