Research has shown that water droplets contain one secret ingredient that turns out to be the key to the chemistry of our early planet.

For decades, scientists believed that life on Earth originated in the ocean, but the process of formation of peptides in water seemed inexplicable. Today, this mystery has also been revealed – scientists have finally managed to discover the secret ingredient, which is essentially responsible for the formation of life on our planet, writes SciTechDaily.

The best chemists from Purdue University, led by the distinguished professor of analytical chemistry named after Henry Bon Hass, Graham Cooks, fought over this problem. According to him, in fact, he and his colleagues managed to reveal the “chemistry of the origin of life”, no less.

Cooks and colleagues believe that they were the first in the world to demonstrate, in fact, the origin of life on Earth. In essence, they recreated how primary molecules, simple amino acids, form peptides, the building blocks of life in drops of pure water, a truly amazing discovery.

In the study, Cooks and colleagues used mass spectrometers to study chemical reactions in a drop and found the answer to the riddle: “why the water is not wet everywhere.” It turned out that at the boundaries of the droplet, where water essentially meets the atmosphere, extremely fast reactions occur that turn amino acids into the building blocks of life.

As a result, scientists came to the conclusion that life on Earth did not form at all in the ocean, but on the border of land and ocean, in places where spray rose into the air, and waves beat against rocks, or places where fresh water flowed down a slope.< /p>

Chemists have been studying various reactions in drops for more than ten years and have come to the conclusion that the reactions in them are hundreds or even millions of times higher than the same reactions, but in a bulk solution.

According to Cooks, the rate of these amazing reactions is so high that it makes any catalysts for the origin of life unnecessary – in fact, the evolution of life occurred only due to the rate of chemical reactions.

Scientists believe that their data is not only reveal the secret of the origin of life on Earth, but in the future they can also be used to search for life on other planets or even moons. Moreover, the data obtained during the study should help synthetic chemists in the development of new drugs and methods of treating diseases by accelerating key processes.
