What do locals think about cycling in the area? ? La roue libre de Thau asks the question through a barometer

Les sorties à vélo sur la Corniche. Midi Libre – Vincent ANDORRA

L’association La Roue libre de Thau invite les habitants de toutes les communes de l’Agglo à participer à l’enquête "le baromètre vélo", à partir du vendredi 28 février.

La Roue libre de Thau is a group of 300 members, all in favor of using bicycles on a daily basis, whether they are mountain bikers or not. It was created in June 2015, so it is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. Members meet to propose and think about developments around cycling, but also for outings, rides, self-repair workshops and bicycle learning sessions for adults.

4th edition of the “bicycle barometer”

This collective of urban cyclists is a member of the Fédération des Usagers de la Bicyclette (FUB). This federation now brings together more than 550 associations defending the use of bicycles on a daily basis. And it is the federation that is setting up the “bicycle barometer” for the fourth edition. This national survey was first conducted in 2017, and was repeated in 2019, 2021, and this year in 2025.

At least 50 responses per municipality for the ranking

Daniel Rigaud, a member of La Roue libre de Thau, specifies that “each resident can participate by providing the name of their municipality, whether they are a mountain biker or not“. You must then answer a series of questions divided into five categories: developments and data, overall feeling, safety, comfort, and effort of the city. The responses are classified by grade from G to A + (G corresponding to “very unfavorable” and A + to “excellent”). The results of the questions from all participating citizens provide an overall rating for the city. Daniel Rigaud adds that “These will then be classified according to the cycling climate of each city“. At least 50 responses must be collected per municipality for them to be included in the final ranking.

The black spots on Sète

Since 2015, a development project for Boulevard Verdun Blanc (extension of the RD2) has been underway, but it has not been implemented for 10 years now. For Daniel Rigaud, this route remains difficult to use without the two-way cycle path initially planned. À Added to this are the major parking difficulties, particularly in the city centre; the member of the collective La Roue libre de Thau insists on the lack of hoops and parking boxes. bike “that are packed to the gills or too expensive“.

Another black mark, the bike paths are also too narrow for Daniel Rigaud, “either because there are trees or flower pots in the middle that prevent people from crossing, or because anti-intrusion devices, particularly for motorized two-wheelers, prevent cargo bikes from passing, most of which are parents and their children“.

Sète ranked E in 2021

The city of Sète in 2021 was ranked E (rather unfavorable), with 208 participants. The city of Mèze, on the other hand, was ranked C (rather favorable) with 55 participants. For information, the number of participants in Paris intra-muros did not exceed 10,000 participants in 2021. Daniel Rigaud explains that the whole point of this barometer is to “give your feelings, as a cyclist, or simply as a local resident. It's really a life-size survey, where you express your personal feelings.” Each participant therefore has an appointment from Friday, February 28, on the site, baromètre.parlons-velo.fr, to give their opinion on the “cycling climate”.

The bicycle barometer survey will be open for three months.
