It's undeniable. Today, used smartphones are popular . They are more popular than ever. Choosing a refurbished smartphone is good for your wallet and for the planet. Thus, while the market for new smartphones is experiencing a sharp decline, due to consumer fatigue and prices which are going through the roof, that of reconditioned phones is doing well. Better yet, sales of used smartphones have exploded over the past six years.

However, the French are still reluctant to resell their old smartphone. According to a recently published survey, 7 out of 10 consumers in France have never resold a smartphone. There is still a long way to go.

When you resell your old smartphone, you should expect to see its price drop. That's the game. But, of course, the discount varies depending on the brands and models. Our colleagues at Monde wanted to compare the discount of the major phone brands. So, is it better to resell your iPhone or your Samsung ?

Which smartphone brands are losing value the fastest ?

To compare the depreciation of major phone brands, journalists from Mondenoted the price evolution of models released in 2020, 2021 and 2022 on the used and refurbished smartphone market. Then, they focused on high-end smartphones between 700 and 1000 euros and mid-range models between 400 and 500 euros. The brands analyzed in this comparison are Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi and Oppo.

The finding is clear: on Android, high-end smartphones are losing value very quickly while premium iPhones are holding their own. For example, the Samsung Galaxy S22 (released in 2022) is now worth only a third of its new price while the iPhone 14 (also released in 2022) is still worth approximately half of its new price.

On the other hand, it is on the mid-range smartphone side that the trend is reversing. Android mobiles sold between 400 and 500 euros are more resistant to the erosion of time, with those from 2022 still worth around 40% of the price of new ones. On the Cupertino firm's side, mid-range mobiles are showing an even greater and faster depreciation.

So, if you are looking for a used smartphone at a mini price, it is wiser to turn to the iPhone SE (from 2022 as well as 2020) while high-end fans will have every interest in choosing an Android smartphone to hope to save money.
