Synthesia, a British startup specializing in avatars generated by artificial intelligence (AI), has just raised $180 million. An operation that values it at 2.1 billion dollars, more than double the amount reached during its previous round of funding in 2023.
More than 60,000 client companies
Founded in 2017, Synthesia markets software that quickly transforms prompts into photorealistic digital avatar videos. According to the company, it is a rather cost-effective way for its customers to train new staff or demonstrate products. Its technology, which is based on both its own model and those developed by other firms, works in more than 140 languages.
And its solution attracts. The company now has more than 60,000 client companies, compared to 50,000 in June 2023. Among them are giants like Uber and ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok. Synthesia claims that 60% of Fortune 100 firms use its services. Its annual turnover is estimated at $70 million.
While it has serious competitors like Runway, Colossyan or Veed, the startup is accelerating to expand its product. For example, it now allows you to create an avatar using the camera of a laptop or smartphone. It has also launched its Chrome extension to edit a video from the data available on the screen. A video assistant capable of converting documents into video is also available.

Synthesia ensures that its technology is secure
The rise of AI, and particularly video generators, is raising significant concerns about the spread of deepfakes. Synthesia assures that its individual users cannot create content related to current events. On the other hand, companies do have the opportunity.
This new round of funding shows that the hype around generative AI is still here in 2025, although some analysts expect investment in the sector to slow slightly.
The funding will allow Synthesia to continue its expansion in North America, Europe, Japan and Australia. The company currently employs more than 400 people in its offices in seven countries, including Denmark, Germany and the United States. It plans to launch, this year, a feature to dictate the body movements and environment of an avatar.
Ultimately, the startup imagines direct exchanges between avatars and users, like a conversation between two people.
