Why do experienced drivers add acetone, kerosene and alcohol to the gas tank

Today, in any automotive store and even in the auto department of a hypermarket, you can find a bunch of small jars, “valve/injector/carburetor cleaners,” “anti-stickers,” “octane boosters,” on each of which the manufacturer swears by the uniqueness of the formula of the life-saving composition, informs Ukr.Media.

In fact, the vast majority of these spray cans were created by middle-class chemists who have improved their knowledge of marketing a little. Everything that is contained in numerous jars has long been invented. It's just that today, like everything convenient and beautiful, it is sold with a large margin.

And before there was nothing like it. Advice from experienced motorists and mechanics was passed on by word of mouth. Some successful solutions were achieved literally by the tick method.

Since the principle of operation of the internal combustion engine has not fundamentally changed since then, all these “tricks” still work today. And their cost is much lower than that of a jar with an unknown liquid.

So, why do experienced drivers pour acetone into the tank? According to beliefs, this miraculous liquid almost reduces fuel consumption. In fact, acetone is known to slightly enrich the fuel-air mixture. This will help if, for example, bad gasoline was poured into the tank.

However, this tool should be used with maximum caution. As you know, acetone is a very effective solvent, so its excess in the fuel system can have a bad effect on its integrity.

However, it can sometimes be added to 92 and 95 gasoline for prevention. And 98 is so highly purified that it is not recommended to add to it. Everyone pours differently, but you can start from the calculation of 50 ml of acetone per 10 liters of fuel.

In addition, there is an opinion that with the systematic use of acetone, candles and nozzles are cleaned. But let's make a note once again that you need to pour very carefully: acetone in large quantities has a bad effect on rubber gaskets, gradually drying them out and turning them into something like very fragile plastic.

There are also craftsmen who pour liters of solvent into the gas tank to clean the engine and the fuel and exhaust lines. Here it should be noted that the engine will really eat the solvent, but it has an octane number of only 70, so if you pour it in, then leave the engine at idle for a little while, so as not to overheat with detonation. And the smell of the exhaust from it is specific.

In principle, the same acetone copes quite well with this task, since it is also a solvent.

The solvent, by the way, is contained in jars with removal of moisture in fuel tanks. And together with it there is, of course, technical alcohol. It binds water well and does not affect the engine at all.

Another well-known means is kerosene, which is still used by owners of diesel cars. This is a great remedy against freezing of diesel fuel. It is kerosene derivatives that are contained in jars with the inscription “antigel”. Most of them use ethylene, which is obtained from kerosene.

But what happens if you add kerosene to gasoline? Well, in general, if you pour carefully, then nothing bad should happen. True, it has an octane number of about 50, so detonation in the engine will be strong. In addition, it does not have a very good effect on the integrity of the catalysts. Therefore, if you decide to do it, you should do it carefully and rarely.

One of the main problems will be the dirt, impurities and deposits that kerosene will pick up in the gas tank – it is heavier than gasoline. All this garbage will then go straight to the combustion chamber. So if you are going to pour kerosene into the tank, think about it and weigh your decision several times.

And of course, you should not forget about the famous Dimexide. If there is something to clean the inside of the motor, then it probably has no equal. True, it is not worth pouring it into the fuel tank. This tool should be rubbed directly into the engine parts.
