A lizard the size of a cow, with flippers instead of legs, 2 A 5-meter neck and mouth of a crocodile – this is how scientists describe the found prehistoric monster.

It is believed that all plesiosaurs that evolved late are roughly divided into two categories. The first is with long necks and tiny heads, the second is with short necks and long jaws. A recently discovered prehistoric monster is so bizarre that it mixes both of these categories, writes the Daily Mail.

The remains of a bizarre prehistoric beast that roamed the oceans 70 million years ago were discovered by scientists from the College of Charleston. The skeleton of a 23-meter creature was discovered in the Pierre Shale in Wyoming – there was once a huge inland sea.

The beast discovered by scientists turned out to be so bizarre that it could hardly be imagined. What is the name Serpentissuchops worth, which literally translates as “snake crocodile face”.

But much more fascinating was the first description of a previously unknown prehistoric predator. According to study lead author and professor of geology Scott Persons, the animal resembles a cow-sized lizard, with flippers for legs and a giraffe-like long neck (about 2.5 meters) and a crocodile-like mouth. Here is such a bizarre prehistoric inhabitant of the seas.

Scientists were very surprised by the structure of the monster's skeleton, especially its long neck. For comparison, in humans, it has only 7 vertebrae, while the long neck of a prehistoric predator consisted of 32 vertebrae and was longer than that of a giraffe.

Researchers suggest that such unusual forms allowed Serpentissuchops to dominate the prehistoric sea. Persons believes that the long neck and narrow, elongated muzzle allowed the predator to make quick lateral strikes on the water. Most likely, it was this technique that the creature used to catch small but fast prey.

Note that the skeleton was first discovered by scientists back in 1995. It has since been kept at the Glenrock Paleontological Museum, where a group of enthusiasts are slowly chipping away at the rock that hides the fossil. And only in a new study, scientists have finally documented such a bizarre prehistoric predator.
