Since December 2023, the European Commission has launched an investigation into the social network X (formerly Twitter). The aim is to determine whether the platform is complying with its obligations regarding content moderation and is complying with the Digital Services Act (DSA).
As disinformation is increasingly being pointed out on the service owned by Elon Musk and the latter is also accused of being a purveyor of “fake news”, concern is growing in Europe. Especially since the owner of X enjoys great influence with Donald Trump and openly calls for the resignation of several democratically elected governments of the Old Continent while supporting far-right parties.
Interviewed on the social network by Bloomberg TV, the Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, Henna Virkkunen, shared her point of view. She indicated that the body plans to go further in its investigation: “We are currently assessing whether the scope is broad enough”.
200% Deposit Bonus up to €3,000 180% First Deposit Bonus up to $20,000For the rest, the leader is extremely cautious and does not intend to upset her relations with the future tenant of the White House: “We look forward to the moment when he takes office as President of the United States. We are ready to cooperate very closely with him.”
The European Union will have a lot to do to apply its regulations. The CEOs of the tech giants who have gotten closer to Donald Trump are calling on the latter to weigh in against the fines imposed on GAFAM.
A guest on Joe Rogan's podcast last week, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO and founder of Meta, for example, lamented: “It's almost like a tariff. I think the American government has to decide how it's going to handle that.”
During an interview with France Inter, Jean Noël Barrot, the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, raised the idea of a possible ban on X in France. He explained:
In 2022, when France was chairing the European Union, we said stop, that there is no question of public debate being relocated in a totally unregulated manner to large social media platforms owned by American or Chinese billionaires.
He added: “I have called on the European Commission several times to use these tools, which we democratically gave it, much more vigorously to dissuade these behaviors.”. These remarks contrast with the moderation of the EU authorities. More information on this subject in our previous article here.
