Xavier Dolan: first images of his horror series for Canal+

The night Laurier Gaudreault woke up, the first series directed by Xavier Dolan finally revealed itself in a first burst of intriguing images.

We don't really introduce Xavier Dolan anymore. A true genius for some, an eternal scam for others, the Quebec filmmaker has managed, in ten years and eight films, to establish himself as a formidable artistic promise— even with its most inveterate detractors. Mainly known for the recurrence of his favorite themes and the perpetual exacerbation of his cinematographic device, Xavier Dolan fascinates as much as he irritates. It is therefore not surprising that the young filmmaker's upcoming projects systematically arouse interest.

Thus, after an unfortunate detour through the lands of Hollywood with the medium My life with John F. Donovan, Xavier Dolan first wanted to return to a more intimate cinema (as evidenced in particular by his very pretty Matthias & Maxime), before taking a short break. The opportunity for the filmmaker to simultaneously go back in front of the camera, and give his next project time to properly mature.

Adapted from the play by playwright Michel Marc Bouchard (with whom Xavier Dolan has already had the opportunity to collaborate on Tom à la ferme), and presented as a psychological thriller with horrific overtones, La Night where Laurier Gaudreault woke up will tell the story of Mireille Larouche (played by Julie LeBreton), a renowned thanatologist who returns to her hometown, thirty years after being raped there.

Hard to miss in this relative plot to mourning, self-acceptance, and family relationships damaged by life, the different elements that pushed the filmmaker to want to bring the play to the screen.

Filming finished last December, Xavier Dolan since seemed very inclined to play the card of discretion with regard to this new project. Nevertheless, in order to begin what promises to be a first promotional campaign for the series, the filmmaker revealed on his Instagram account a first round of promising shots:

These images therefore reveal one by one the future characters of this family drama. We therefore discover the actors and actresses Julie LeBreton (Les Pays d'en Haut), Patrick Hivon (The Affamés), Elijah Patrice- Baudelot (Living at 100 miles an hour), Jasmine Lemée (Paul in Quebec), Brendon Tremblay (Hockey gang) and Magalie Lépine-Blondeau (Laurence Anyways), each bathed intwilight chiaroscuro alongside Xavier Dolan and his faithful cinematographer, André Turpin.

We know, however, that in France, the series will be broadcast on Canal+. The time until then to discover, or rediscover, the universe and the filmography of the filmmaker.
