In December, OpenAI made a series of major announcements, including the $200 ChatGPT Pro subscription. This somewhat unusual subscription is not aimed at the general public, but at certain professions (such as engineers or researchers) who have greater needs in terms of computing power and artificial intelligence.
But if you think that this expensive subscription is what makes OpenAI profitable, you’d be wrong. In a recent post on X, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman noted that the organization is currently losing money on this subscription. The reason: OpenAI apparently miscalculated the price of this subscription, since people are using it more than they expected. As a result, ChatGPT Pro users are consuming more computing power and energy than OpenAI anticipated.
In another post, Sam Altman also states that he personally chose the $200 plan because he thought it would allow OpenAI to make a profit.
ChatGPT Pro: What Does the $200 Plan Offer??
As a reminder, the ChatGPT Pro subscription allows unlimited access to the o1, o1-mini, and GPT-4o AI models, as well as ChatGPT’s advanced voice mode. As such, the subscription is suitable for those who use ChatGPT intensively, every day. But in addition to that, OpenAI also offers access to a model called o1 pro to ChatGPT Pro users.
200% Deposit Bonus up to €3,000 180% First Deposit Bonus up to $20,000The o1 model was created to provide users with an AI with better reasoning capacity. And the o1 pro model is described by OpenAI as a version of o1 that uses more computing resources in order to think more and offer improved answers to more difficult problems. Otherwise, OpenAI has also promised to bring additional features to ChatGPT Pro subscription users.
OpenAI still wants to raise funds
In any case, the fact that OpenAI is unable to make a profit with a $200 subscription is a good illustration of the organization’s financial situation. OpenAI started a revolution by launching ChatGPT in 2022. It has already raised billions of dollars and is valued at $157 billion. In addition, thanks to ChatGPT subscriptions and the APIs it offers to developers, OpenAI is already generating billions of dollars in revenue.
However, since AI is very resource-intensive, OpenAI still needs to raise funds to ensure its operation and develop new technologies. That’s why it recently announced plans to change its structure in order to be more attractive to investors.

- Sam Altman says the subscription isn’t profitable despite the high price
- Indeed, subscribers would use their ChatGPT Pro subscription too much (more than what OpenAI had estimated)
- Although it already generates large revenues thanks to its subscriptions and APIs, OpenAI still needs to raise funds to develop new technologies
- It recently announced a project to change its structure to attract more investments
