2024 Was a Good Year for Mac Sales: Here Are the Numbers

IDC has just released a study on PC shipments for the last quarter of 2024, as well as for the full year. According to the study, the market grew by 1.8% in the last quarter, while growth in 2024 was 1%. “Although the market saw a slower return to growth, there was some room for optimism in the fourth quarter as government subsidies in China led to better-than-expected performance in the consumer segment”, said Jitesh Ubrani, research director at IDC’s Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers.

“In addition, the US and some European countries also performed strongly due to year-end promotions, as well as businesses continuing to upgrade their hardware ahead of Windows 10's end of support, which is scheduled for October 2025,”, he added.

But the most interesting thing is that over the course of 2024 and especially in the last quarter, Apple is performing very well compared to the overall PC market. While the PC market grew by 1% in 2024, Mac shipments grew by 4.5%. Apple came in fourth place, with a total of 22.9 million Macs shipped. In addition, its sales exploded during the last quarter. In fact, over this three-month period, Apple shipped 7 million units, which corresponds to an increase of 17.3%.

The M4 chip is a hit ?

As usual, IDC doesn’t provide details on the most popular models. But it’s likely that Apple’s strong growth in the third quarter is attributed to the launch of its new Macs powered by the M4 chip and its variants. In October, Apple introduced a new iMac, an ultra-compact Mac mini, and a new MacBook Pro, powered by the M4 chip. In addition, it’s possible that the arrival of Apple Intelligence, which is compatible with Macs, also helped boost sales.

And in 2025, the Cupertino company could strike even harder. Indeed, next year, the company should present new processors (the M5 chips, which could benefit from significant improvements). It could also offer quite a few new designs for its laptops.
