“Of course we wanted Martin Fourcade,” assured Laurent Wauquiez on Tuesday, estimating that there was “a part of the personal aspect” in the former biathlete's choice to give up the presidency of the organizing committee of the 2030 Olympic Games.

“I was still in contact with Martin the day before yesterday. We both saw each other two weeks ago. And for us, all the signals were green. Afterwards, I respect Martin's decision”, declared the former president of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (Aura) region on BFM-TV.

Despite the support of the sports movement and the State, Fourcade, whom Emmanuel Macron had described as “Tony Estanguet of the mountains”, threw in the towel on Monday “so as not to sacrifice” his “convictions” after months of“disagreements” with the Aura and Paca regions.

“The star is the French Alps”

“Taking care of the Olympic Games is very engaging. And in his decision, there is a part of the personal aspect that I respect”, estimated Wauquiez.

“Martin is very attached to his personal balance. And that's good, because I know too well the sacrifices that it can represent to do this kind of mission. There were aspects of conviction about what he wanted for the Olympic Games. And there were personal aspects.””Now, I hope he will be with us. And what I want above all is that in these Olympic Games, the star is the French Alps”, concluded the president of the LR group of deputies in the Assembly.

“A breath of fresh air” for Renaud Muselier

Several sources within the government and the Olympic movement had confided to the AFP in recent months that Martin Fourcade was not favored by Laurent Wauquiez.

The president of the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur region, Renaud Muselier, reacted vigorously on Monday by declaring that Fourcade's withdrawal was “a breath of fresh air” for Renaud Muselier

and that the multiple Olympic champion was “a loner who cannot work in a collective”.
