3 good reasons to buy an electric car in 2024

Buying an electric car seems like a risk today. However, a recent American study shows the opposite. It assures that 91% of buyers of these new vehicles are “happy” with their choice. A surprising figure when you consider that other surveys placed this figure around 50 to 60%.

This survey, conducted by Enedis, therefore hopes to put an end to old ideas about electric cars. In the minds of many people, these cars are still “too restrictive” or “too expensive”. But the reality is often far from the prejudices.

Charging, a false problem

Let's take as an example these two arguments, which constantly come up in discussions about electric cars. The first says that electric cars are “constraining”. It would indeed be more difficult to recharge them and their limited autonomy would make us drive with a sword of Damocles hanging over our heads.

As for the question of recharging, unless you live in a cave, we all have electricity at home. It is therefore possible to recharge your car from home, in one night you should have regained full autonomy.

For stops along the way, there are currently no fewer than a million charging stations in France. While their disparity can be problematic in some regions, all departments have several charging stations. Anywhere in France (except for very rare exceptions) you have a charging station less than 50 kilometers from your location.

In addition to being easy, it is always good to remember that charging an electric car is a blessing for the planet, and for our wallets.

Range: as good as thermals?

Now let's get to the tricky question, that of range. Indeed, electric cars have a bad reputation for not being able to run for more than 150 kilometers without breaking down. This is obviously false.

Let's take the example of the brand new Renault R-5, a model of its kind on the electric car market. The French manufacturer claims a range of 410 kilometers. To give you an idea, this is enough to travel from Paris to Brussels in one go (and there are still 100 kilometers left on the clock).

The range of electric cars can, however, go much higher. Mercedes-Benz demonstrated this by traveling from Stuttgart (its headquarters in Germany) to the Silverstone racing circuit in Great Britain. 1202 kilometers without stopping to recharge its batteries.

The price

The last point that bothers the general public when it comes to electric cars is their price. And this is probably the last valid argument in favor of thermal cars. We could say that over time and with the cost of recharging much lower than that of gasoline, electric cars are more economical, but the purchase price is higher.

The most striking example of this price difference between an electric car and its thermal twin is Fiat. A few months ago, the Italian manufacturer presented a new electric version of its legendary Fiat 500. It is sold for around 30,000 euros (depending on the model and options).

Its big thermal sister is available, new, for around 18,000 euros. The price is almost halved. Faced with this unequal competition, Fiat has even decided to stop producing an electric version of its Fiat 500.

This question of price is the last major battle that car manufacturers must wage to get their electric cars adopted. With the 2035 deadline hanging over their heads, there is no longer any question of wasting time and electric cars must become the norm.

For this to happen, the general public must be able to afford such a purchase. The arrival of new models under 25,000 euros should help move in this direction, but the second-hand market must also develop in the coming years with cars under 15,000 euros for the smallest budgets.
