A film project turned into a series

Originally, Sam Esmail wanted to make a feature film. He finally realized that the story he wanted to tell was too complex to fit into the format of a film. So he decided to adapt this project into a series.

But he later decided to treat the series with the same level of requirement as if it were a cinematographic work. This explains the refined touch of many passages, the impeccable work on the soundtrack and certain scenes that have nothing to envy the greatest gems of the seventh art.

Rami Malek received significant support

Excellent in the role of Elliot, Rami Malek got his role thanks to actress Emmy Rossum who is none other than Sam Esmail's wife. The American star had previously been impressed by the actor's performance in the HBO series: Band of Brothers: Pacific Rim .

So she suggested the latter to her husband. But he still had to be convinced definitively and the competition was tough, since Rami Malek faced a hundred other artists to embody the famous hacker during the casting.

The story is inspired by true events

Sam Esmail has admitted to drawing inspiration from various real-world events to design his storyline. He cites the 2008 financial crisis and the Arab Spring that began in 2010. In fact, the fragility of the financialized economy and the rebellion of the people against the backdrop of new technologies are at the heart of the plot of these four seasons. The question of the realism of the hacks that take place in the series has also been much discussed, but that’s another story.
