4 excellent mini-series to enjoy this holiday weekend

© Netflix

It is often difficult to launching into a series that is too long. It is indeed sometimes difficult to motivate oneself for a creation that risks never ending, or even concluding without a real ending if the streaming platform decides to cancel it abruptly.

Mini-series have thus become a natural refuge for wary viewers, and as a three-day weekend begins (for all those lucky enough to enjoy it), we thought it was a good time to recommend 4 gems that have recently been released.

This six-episode Netflix series is an adaptation of the best-selling novel of the same name by Elin Hilderbrand. An American couple is planning a lavish wedding on Nantucket, an island in Massachusetts. But nothing goes as planned, and a body is eventually found in the harbor just hours before the ceremony begins.

We then try to find out who the culprit is and everyone is more or less a suspect. By the admission of all those who have watched it, this production is particularly addictive and we watch the episodes at lightning speed. The writers also know how to lighten the atmosphere with a touch of humor that hits the mark.

It's 2001. M6 is embarking on an adventure that will revolutionize television. Its reality TV show, Loft Story, shakes up the codes and shocks. We particularly enjoyed this Amazon Prime Video production which includes six episodes:

From the first minutes of episode 1, Culte grabs us and promises us a thrilling series. The pace is frenetic and perfectly mastered and we get caught up in the game very quickly. Who could have predicted that the creation of the first French reality TV show could be so captivating ? Not us. Yet, it is indeed the case.

The apple brand hits hard with this creation adapted from the eponymous book released in 1987, already adapted for the screen in a film by Alan J. Pakula with Harrison Ford. Here, we follow the daily life of Rusty Sabich (Jake Gyllenhaal) who is the chief assistant district attorney of Chicago and officiates under the orders of Raymond Horgan (Bill Camp).

His life is turned upside down after the murder of Carolyn Polhemus (Renate Reinsve), another rising star in the district attorney's office. The case is assigned to Rusty, but it is soon revealed that he had a torrid romantic relationship with the deceased… We recommend this little gem that even manages to surprise all those who already know the original story.

In this 5-episode Netflix series, we follow the story of a young man, Taylor, who has only one dream: to become a professional MMA fighter. That's when destiny knocks on his door. He is offered an extraordinary opponent and the fighter is determined to take advantage of it.

Our colleagues at Journal du Geek particularly liked this production by Franck Gastambide:

We can't say that La Cage stands out for its script that is too close to its Balboesque model nor for its cast that does what it can with what it is asked to play. Nevertheless, its sincere and well-made declaration of love for MMA and its practitioners makes the series a treat for those who appreciate this sport. A difficult fight, but in the end, only victory counts and Franck Gastambide wins his belt.

Note that we deliberately chose to stick to mini-series that you can watch in a single weekend. Of course, you can also opt for slightly longer formats and we recommend in particular Arcane whose season 2 has just been released on Netflix, or Silo and Slow Horses on Apple TV+.
