Pour l’anniversaire des 40 ans de l’appellation Languedoc, l’an prochain, le Syndicat de l’AOP Languedoc a décidé de la raconter au travers de la parution de trois livres et d’une série de festivités.

Rather than sinking into the ambient gloom due to the current crisis that all French wine regions are experiencing without exception, the Languedoc AOP Syndicate has decided to launch a whole series of events and demonstrations to celebrate the 40th anniversary of its appellation in 2025. “The best way to face difficulties is to get moving“, specifies its president, Jean-Benoît Cavalier.

And above all, a great opportunity to get the appellation talked about throughout the year, make it even better known and win the hearts of new consumers, as well as prescribers. Not forgetting celebrations to honour its wine-growing past, and even more so these winegrowers who work tirelessly to offer us quality, sunny and festive wines that reflect what our region is.

The great wine-growing history of Languedoc

A legacy of the Greeks, then the Romans, the vine is indeed in the DNA of Languedoc. “We therefore took advantage of this 40th anniversary to raise awareness of the great wine history of Languedoc, the genesis of viticulture in this region and the last three centuries that have led us to where we are today. To do this, we asked three unique authors who know the region well to each write a book on this history to highlight the men and women who worked to build this region“, explains the director of the union, Stéphanie Daumas.

Three books, three periods. Following the chronology, the first covers Antiquity, the second from the Middle Ages to the recognition of the Coteaux du Languedoc appellation in 1985, and the third from this recognition to today. The first one released, that of the former journalist of Midi Libre and author of several works on the wine-growing terroirs of Languedoc-Roussillon, Marc Médevielle, was presented on Thursday, December 5 at the Maison des vins de Mas de Saporta, in Lattes (the next two will be published in 2025, Editor's note).

To better understand the relationship between winegrowers and their terroirs, the author explored ancient sources left by agronomists, naturalists and researchers. “All of them wrote remarkable texts, notably by highlighting the links between what one can feel in wine and in front of the landscape where it draws its roots“, explains Marc Médevielle. And to write through these portraits three centuries of history of wine-growing regions and the emergence of viticulture that goes against the grain of industrial viticulture that dominated Languedoc at the time.

2025, it's party time for the AOP Languedoc

As for the festivities, the union will pull out all the stops with a grand banquet for 300 people at the Mas de Saporta on January 27, around unexpected pairings, and open to the public. The theme chosen for the wines around this particular variation of “L'Accord Inattendu” will be, unsurprisingly, the wines of the AOP Languedoc and its denominations.

The course will then be set for Paris as part of the “Printemps du Languedoc” from April 27 to May 4, 2025. In keeping with the facelift for Saporta's “Estivales” initiated last summer, some electro evenings will be on the program during the summer of 2025 and another, once a week, with an offer for children, including an introduction to flavors and smells. Festive and in sharing, the AOP is certainly as festive as its wines.
