5 Little-Known Facts About The Sopranos, the Legendary Series

Spread the love

© HBO < p>Some series have left their mark on the history of pop culture. However, the production of a gem is based on a fragile balance that is often unknown to the general public. From casting to script choices, including enmities or moments of grace, the destiny of a creation sometimes reveals real surprises. Here are 5 secrets from filming The Sopranos by David Chase.

The series was supposed to be a movie

Early in development, David Chase, the creator of The Sopranos, was considering making a feature film based on this synopsis: “A mobster in therapy who has issues with his mother, who is also involved in some sort of gang war or mob-related issue”.

Eventually, Lloyd Braun, the latter's PR manager, convinced him to turn it into a series for the enjoyment of viewers around the world. Six seasons will follow.

The series really puts this American state in the spotlight

The story is supposed to take place in New Jersey and this premise was perfectly maintained during filming. The family home is located in this American state in North Caldwell. The same goes for the strip club and the Satriale. It should be noted, however, that a large part of the production took place on a set in New York.

Tony Soprano could have been played by another actor

James Gandolfini steals the show in his role, but the latter could well have passed him by. Thus, David Chase considered hiring Steven Van Zandt to play Tony Soprano on screen. Van Zandt did not leave empty-handed, however, as he slipped into the shoes of Silvio in the series.

The Sopranos cast knows each other well

The generation of actors who made the Sopranos a success know each other very well, having worked together in other feature films. We are thinking in particular of the excellent Les Affrainchis or The Irishman, both signed by Martin Scorsese.

This major network refused the series

It's hard to imagine it, given how much of a hit it was. But the series passed under the nose of Fox, which refused it, to the great delight of HBO.
