On February 4, Ornikar shares its assessment for the year 2024, marked by a successful diversification strategy. For the occasion, Presse-citron tells you more about the leader in road safety education in France.

Democratizing access to the driving license

Ornikar was founded in 2013 by Benjamin Gaignault and Flavien Le Rendu, two entrepreneurs aged 24 and 25 at the time. Their goal: to modernize and democratize access to the driving license, the most widely passed exam in the world, but also synonymous with ” galère ” for many.

” A study said that the driving license was the most widely passed exam in France, but also in the world. At the same time, there is a dissatisfaction rate of 82% in driving schools in France. Also, in 2013, Uber arrived on the French market with a new social model: that of using the independent. It is by combining all this data that we came to want to create Ornikar, with this economic model “, confided Benjamin Gaignault, co-founder of the company, in an interview with Manager.one in 2021.

An online driving school

Ornikar offers a complete range of services related to learning to drive, with a multitude of educational content on the highway code and the driving license, ranging from online courses to thematic quizzes and videos. Interactive live sessions hosted by qualified teachers are also offered.

Ornikar's strength also lies in the possibility for its customers to obtain driving lessons via the platform, from independent instructors. An offer that provides greater flexibility with, sometimes, much more advantageous amounts than through physical driving schools.

The company is now the leader in learning the highway code in France with a 40% market share. It relies on a network of 2,500 partner teachers available throughout France, and has attracted 4.5 million students and customers since its creation, it states in a press release.

An insurance service

Ornikar has also diversified its activities by launching into the field of car insurance. It initially focused on young drivers, with personalized insurance contracts.

The start-up offers three insurance plans, essential guarantees, and differentiating services such as mechanical diagnostics by videoconference, driving sessions with an instructor, and even psychological support after an accident. All of which can be managed entirely via a mobile application.

It has over 100,000 policies underwritten, a figure it aims to double in the next two years. In August 2024, Ornikar also rolled out home insurance in partnership with Acheel, a French insurtech player.

Internationalization

Ornikar has raised several funds since its creation, notably in 2021 with a funding round of 100 million euros. Enough to support its efforts to strengthen its presence abroad. Because the startup is also present in Germany and Spain, where it operates under the brand name Onroad.

More than 100 million euros in turnover

In 2024, Ornikar exceeded 100 million euros in turnover. A performance that it describes as a “ major breakthrough “. ” We have more than doubled our turnover since 2020 by expanding our impact on mobility and opening up to new markets. This demonstrates the tremendous potential of our model and our vision ”, says Philippe Maso y Guell Rivet, the company’s CEO.

Strengthening B2B activity

And that’s not all. Targeting a professional mobility sector estimated at more than 2 billion euros, the startup intends to diversify its offering by proposing innovative B2B training courses, focused on road safety and eco-driving.

By expanding its scope, Ornikar aims to support companies in two crucial issues: reducing professional risks and optimizing the carbon footprint of their fleets. Through specific training, the company will enable employers to raise awareness among their employees about road hazards and responsible driving practices, thereby transforming the traditional management of business travel.

Setting up training courses

Similarly, Ornikar is expanding its offering with the launch of points recovery courses. This new service, launched at the request of certain drivers and their families, aims to offer a simple and reliable solution for those who wish to rebuild their points capital.

This initiative is part of Ornikar's overall strategy to offer comprehensive and personalized support throughout the drivers' journey. From initial training to advanced training courses, including points recovery, the company wants to offer a seamless experience that is adapted to the new challenges of mobility, covering the needs of both apprentices and professional drivers.

« In recent years, Ornikar has focused on strengthening its existing activities to offer a better quality of service to its users. Our financial base allows us to accelerate calmly on other products, such as insurance, and tomorrow banking », concludes Benjamin Gaignault.
