As expected, Samsung has just presented two new smartphones during its biannual Unpacked event. The South Korean brand has notably lifted the veil on the new generations of Galaxy Z Fold and Flip, these folding smartphones. In this article we will not focus on the “clamshell” model. When it comes to the Z Fold 6, Samsung didn’t do things by halves. The firm knows that this phone with its very particular format has a great popularity rating among the general public. The device must nevertheless succeed in becoming more accessible to conquer everyone.

In addition to the price, which is a natural obstacle, Samsung wanted to work on the shape of its product. The Fold 6 is therefore designed as a light and easy to handle device. It presents more angular shapes, completely in tune with the times.

Lighter, thinner, more elegant

The Z Fold 6 is listed at 239g, just 6g more than the Galaxy S24 Ultra. This is 14 grams less than the Z Fold 5.

In addition to this positive development on the weight, the South Korean company explains having worked on the size of the device. When closed, the smartphone measures just 12.2mm. This represents a gain of 1.2mm compared to the previous generation. Also open, this Z Fold 6 is thinner than the Z Fold 5, the margin would be 0.5 mm. It's hard to see with the naked eye, but this kind of detail can make all the difference after months and months of use.

Still performing well

If the shape of the Z Fold 6 has evolved quite a bit this year, the background is much more classic. The smartphone thus has a battery of 4400 mA · h,a Snapdragon 8 Gen3 processor with 12 GB of RAM covered by an even more durable screen (Gorilla Victus 2 glass) with a refresh rate ranging from 1 to 120 Hz.

As for the photo block, Samsung promises the same 50 Mpx main sensor as on the S24 and S24+ presented at the start of the year. The firm also uses the same visual engine. This is the first time that Samsung has decided to keep the same photo block for its devices of the same year.

It's no surprise to anyone, but the big news this year on the Z Fold 6 is obviously the arrival of Galaxy AI. The artificial intelligence tool developed by Samsung should make the use of this smartphone more fluid.

Concretely, Galaxy AI will intervene to automatically translate messages (even on third-party apps). The Fold 6 also has a web article summary feature on its second screen. Finally, Galaxy AIT will further personalize the smartphone with an option to generate wallpapers on demand or even modify the background of the latter depending on the time of day and the current weather.

An eco-friendly smartphone?

Last important point, Samsung announces that it has made efforts regarding the recycling of raw materials in its devices. The South Korean firm announces that it uses recycled glass, plastic, rare metals and cobalt. Regarding the latter precisely, it is present in large numbers in the phone's battery. Samsung assures that 50% of this cobalt comes from old recycled metals.

More good news for the planet, the Z Fold 6 will be updated by Samsung and Android for seven years. The firm thus ensures a long lifespan for the smartphone. A good way to keep your device over time, and thus reduce your environmental footprint.

Prices and availability

Like all the products presented by Samsung during this Unpacked conference, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will be available from July 24 on the brand's website. It will be sold from 1999 euros for the 256 GB version. This is 100 euros more than the Z Fold 5 when it was released last summer. The 512 GB and 1 TB versions will be available at 2119 euros and 2359 euros.
