Tubi, a 100% free alternative to Netflix, has its sights set on Europe

If you've never heard of Tubi, that's normal since this streaming service, with a catalog of more than 20,000 films and series episodes, is not available in the European Union. However, in the United States, and in countries where it is accessible, the platform is a hit. Today, Tubi claims 78 million monthly active users. And one of the reasons for its success is the fact that it is a legal and free streaming service, thanks to advertisements. And while it was already available in the US, Australia, Mexico and Canada, Tubi recently arrived in the UK.

UK launch, then ?

This is not really a first step in Europe, since a few years ago, Tubi was already accessible for free in the EU, including France. However, in 2018, the service became inaccessible in the European Union, when the GDPR came into force, as the Variety site recalls. The launch of Tubi in the United Kingdom, a country which is no longer a member of the European Union, is therefore a sort of return of Tubi to the continent. As for EU member countries, the streaming service is also interested in this, as Tubi seeks to comply with EU rules.

Quoted by Variety, Anjali Sud, its CEO, said: “[as you can imagine, we have done a lot of work to ensure that we are in compliance with all regulations, including GDPR. And more importantly, we have a very robust offering that we think is necessary. So this is our first official attempt (editor's note, the UK launch) and I think we will succeed”. On the other hand, Tubi doesn't seem to be in a hurry either. Indeed, the launch across the Channel will not be immediately followed by a launch in other European countries. Otherwise, remember that Tubi belongs to the American media group Fox.

Netflix : towards a 100 % free offer ?

In any case, it should be remembered that rumors today suggest that even Netflix is considering launching a 100% free subscription, which would be entirely financed by advertising. In June, we relayed an article from Bloomberg indicating that the subject would be the subject of discussions within the company. However, for the moment these would only be discussions, but not a concrete project.

As a reminder, Netflix was previously opposed to the idea of financing its platform with advertising. But ultimately, he changed his mind, and launched the essential subscription with advertising at 5.99 euros. Today, this subscription with advertisements already has 40 million subscribers worldwide. And in countries where this offer is available, 40% of new registrations on Netflix come from this subscription partially financed by advertising. And on a financial level, it is also a success, since advertising brings in large revenues for SVOD.

  • Tubi is not available in France, but it is a hit in the United States, and in other countries where it is available
  • This is 'a completely free platform, with a catalog of more than 20,000 films and series episodes, which is monetized via advertising
  • Tubi has recently relaunched its platform in the UK and says it is working on its compliance with GDPR (the EU rules on personal data)
  • Tubi became inaccessible in the European Union in 2018, when GDPR came into effect
  • As for Netflix, rumors suggest that this would not exclude the possibility of launching an offer entirely financed by advertising
