Apple presented various software developments at the beginning of June, during its traditional WWDC opening conference. If the updates were not to arrive for the general public until the start of the school year, it is already possible to test them with beta versions.

Among the new features announced by Apple, a new application will arrive on Apple Watches with watchOS 11. The most popular connected watches in the world will therefore be entitled to a brand new app: Vitals.

But to make it work best, this application needs to know our biometric data while we sleep. In other words, Vitals can only work if you fall asleep with your Apple Watch on your wrist.

While this may seem obvious to some, sleeping with your Apple Watch is anything but natural for a large number of people. However, Dr Sumbul Desai is clear that the application cannot work without this data. This trained doctor, now vice-president of Apple in charge of the health sector, has made several media interventions in recent weeks to highlight this subject.

Why sleep with a connected watch ?

Because for this doctor, sleeping with a connected watch is anything but a trivial action. Indeed, at night our body rests and regenerates. A phase of the day which is very important, and which offers very valuable dataon our health.

By wearing a connected watch at night, we can know our minimum heart rate, our sleep time and the quality of sleep. People who suffer from sleep apnea can be alerted by their watch in the event of an attack.

Another advantage of wearing a connected watch at night: the alarm clock. By knowing our sleep cycle and analyzing it, connected watches are able to wake us up at the right time. The user can set an “approximate” time wake-up call and depending on our sleep cycle, the watch will choose the right moment to get us out of bed.

How will Vitals work??

Wearing a connected watch at night therefore allows you to have access to a large number of data, each more interesting than the last. Doctors are not mistaken, the information collected is very valuable. But it can be difficult to interpret for the general public.

It is in order to facilitate this work of understanding that Apple developed Vitals. The app should offer a daily overview of health metrics. The objective is to carry out long-term monitoring of our health and to alert the user when data is abnormal.

This does not necessarily mean that a serious problem such as a pathology has been detected, but it can provide insight into our health. The most telling example is surely the duration and quality of sleep. If these data are very poor upon waking up, it is completely normal for the user to spend the day in a fog, with a feeling of intense fatigue.

Even s he may feel like he slept well. In the long term, the arrival of this type of data can make it possible to change habits and adopt a healthier routine in order to improve the quality of sleep, nutrition or more generally lifestyle.
