Apple vs Google vs Samsung: Who will win the AI race in 2024 ?

© Presse-citron

At the end of 2022, OpenAI, a company little known to the general public, launched ChatGPT. Thanks to its conversational and reasoning capabilities, this chatbot quickly conquered the world, and forced many tech players to review their priorities. Today, ChatGPT and similar tools are constantly making headlines. And little by little, generative artificial intelligence is arriving on our smartphones. Indeed, if ChatGPT, Gemini and other models are already accessible on any device with a web browser, smartphone brands are racing to integrate generative AI directly onto their devices.

And for now, the brand that is most likely to win this AI race is Samsung. Very responsive, the Korean brand presented Galaxy AI as early as 2024. As a reminder, this is a series of AI-based features that the manufacturer launched on the Galaxy S24 series, and which then arrived on older high-end models as well as on its latest folding smartphones. Among the Galaxy AI features, there is an AI model that helps write text messages, a feature that summarizes press articles, or even an instant translator.

Samsung's bet has paid off, since it has been able to boost its smartphone sales thanks to Galaxy AI. And the deployment of these new features has been very rapid. In fact, Samsung estimates that by the end of the year, Galaxy AI will be available on over 200 million Galaxy devices.

Apple Intelligence: an excellent presentation

Apple waited until its WWDC conference in June to present Apple Intelligence, its competitor to Galaxy AI. This series of new features includes a (very) improved version of Siri, and lots of new features based on generative AI, such as assistance with writing texts, or even an integration of ChatGPT. However, for the moment, Apple Intelligence is not yet available. And according to a recent Bloomberg article, this series of new AI features would not arrive until October, and would therefore not be available immediately on the iPhone 16.

The other big problem with Apple Intelligence is that due to hardware limitations, this series of new features will only be available on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, as well as future iPhones. In addition, the availability of Apple Intelligence in Europe is uncertain for the moment. The firm has already indicated that it will not offer Apple Intelligence in the EU in 2024, citing uncertainty regarding the Brussels rules.

Google Pixel: a surprise expected in August

It is impossible to talk about the AI race without mentioning Google, which is today one of the leaders in generative artificial intelligence. As a reminder, Google has already launched an equivalent of ChatGPT called Gemini and it is gradually integrating this model into its products, including Pixel smartphones. In August, the company will present its new Pixel 9 series. And rumors are already circulating about the new AI features that could arrive with these models.

For example, one rumor suggests that Google could offer a year of free access to Gemini Advanced, the most powerful version of its AI, to users of its new smartphones. And another rumor indicates that the Pixel 9 series could integrate new call recording and transcription features.
